What are the different ways you can cook frozen burgers? Well, you will agree with me that are many ways of doing this, but one thing that usually confuses many people is whether they can also be cooked in the oven. Can you cook frozen burgers in the oven?
Yes! You can cook frozen burgers in the oven, but there are other things you need to know, which we’ll discuss in this post.
Can You Cook Frozen Burgers In The Oven?
Yes, there is nothing wrong with cooking frozen burger patties in the oven. But keep in mind that you will need to increase the cooking time when putting frozen hamburger meat in the oven.
However, it is still a quicker cooking option than having to properly defrost the patties first before cooking.
There are different ways to cook frozen burgers. Still, regardless of the method of choice, it’s important to thoroughly cook the ground beef so that any bacteria, such as E. Coli or salmonella, that can cause food-borne illnesses is completely eliminated.
Different Ways To Cook Frozen Burgers
Although you are bound to get a better-tasting burger if you use fresh meat, there’s nothing wrong in using frozen burgers, especially if you are short on time and trying to whip up a great dinner without having to scout for fresh meat.
Frozen burgers are highly convenient, and when prepared correctly, you can achieve a delicious tasting dish; here are three methods to cook frozen burgers.
Regardless of the cooking method you opt for, ensure the burger is around 160°f internally, as that indicates they are completely cooked, and all the illness-causing microbes have been killed.
1. Using The Oven
The oven is an excellent way of heating up frozen food, and the food requires very little supervision, unlike if it was being cooked on the stove.
Start by preheating your oven to 400°f; cover a baking sheet with foil, after which you can line the pan with a baking wire rack or a broiler pan.
Although you can lay burgers right on the baking sheet, using any of these items is a better method as the grease is able to cook down to the bottom of the pan and away from the burgers. Which makes things a little healthier, and the foil ensures easy cleanup.
Next, place the burgers on the pan and bake for 20 to 30 minutes, or until they reach your preferred doneness. If you want to add cheese to your burger, flip them over, add the cheese, and cook for extra 5minutes.
2. Using The Grill
There’s nothing better than grilling up some burgers on a hot sunny day, nothing beats summertime barbecues, but you can enjoy grilled burgers during winter time too.
If you are using boxed frozen burgers, you need to remove the paper separators. Next, fire up the grill and let it heat up before adding the frozen patties, and allow them to cook for 3 to 5 minutes before flipping.
A gas or charcoal grill isn’t the only grilling option you have; you can make use of an alternative like Cuisinart Griddler.
3. Using A Pan
If you are used to frying meals on the stovetop, you can cook your frozen burgers with a pan.
Using the pan of your choice, allow it to preheat on the stove on medium heat for a few minutes. You need to coat the pan with some oil to prevent the burger from sticking and get a good char on it.
Place the frozen hamburger patties on the heated pan and allow them to cook for at least 6 minutes or until it reaches your preferred doneness. Flip the burgers over with a spatula and allow the other side for the same amount of time.
Cooking burgers while they are still frozen is a lot easier and a huge timesaver; the only thing you have to worry about is pairing them with a delicious side dish.
How To Cook Frozen Burgers In The Oven
You do not need to allow your frozen hamburger patties to defrost before cooking them; you can, in fact, bake them right from frozen!
Step 1 – Preheat Your Oven
Start by preheating your oven to 425 degrees f before baking your frozen hamburger patties. This ensures that your oven reaches the right temperature before you begin baking.
Step 2 – Prepare Your Burger Patties
While your oven preheats, prepare the burger patties and equipment such as a baking tray, aluminum foil, and a metal wire cooling rack that the patties will be placed on to cool when they come out of the oven.
Placing a layer of aluminum foil down on the baking tray first will make cleanup easier, then place a metal wire rack on top of the tray.
This keeps the frozen hamburger patties elevated off the baking tray, so they are not swimming in excess moisture and oil that is expelled from the patties as they cook; it also prevents grease from splashing all over the oven once they get hot.
Placing the burger patties on a wire rack allows them to cook and brown evenly rather than turning gray and meatloaf textured.
Allow an inch between each patty on the rack so they are not in contact with each other and are spread out evenly.
If wax paper pieces were used to separate the frozen patties from each other in the packaging, they need to be removed.
Some brands of frozen hamburger patties are preseasoned, so check the product packaging to confirm. If not, you can add some salt, pepper, other seasonings such as a BBQ rub, garlic, or onion powder to the patties.
Step 3 – Bake The Patties
With your oven fully preheated, place your baking tray and hamburger patties in the oven. You will need heat-proof oven gloves when placing the trays in or out of the oven.
It should take around 30 to 40 minutes for your frozen hamburger to bake thoroughly from frozen, depending on how thick they are.
You should also note that the temperature of your own oven may vary, which means it may take less or more than 30-40 minutes for the burgers to be cooked through.
You can extend the cooking time in the oven if needed. It takes a longer time to cook hamburger patties taken straight from the freezer than it would take to bake a fresh patty.
But remember, you get to skip having to wait for your patties to defrost completely before baking.
Step 4 – Flip The Patties
As the frozen burger patties bake in the oven, you will need to turn them frequently during the cook. This cooks the patty thoroughly and ensures each side is evenly cooked.
Flip your patties every five minutes, and when it has been cooking for at least twenty-five minutes, add any cheese of choice over the patties and allow to cook for a few more minutes.
Step 5 – Place In The Broiler
If you want a bit of a chargrilled flavor and searing on your patties, place them under the broiler for the last 6-7 minutes of cooking once the burger is well done.
Cook the patties about 3/4 of the way, then switch the oven to broil and transfer the oven rack to the tray close to the broiler.
Keep an eye on the patties as they are in the broiler because it gets hot fast, and your may patties begin to sizzle and sear on the exposed side.
Broil the burger patties for about 3 minutes, or till the exposed side of the patty becomes lightly brown and cooked through, then flip the patties over and cook the opposite side.
Before adding the cheese, turn off the broiler, so the cheese doesn’t burn. You can transfer the tray to a lower rack and allow the residual heat to melt your cheese. Your cooked hamburger patties should have a temperature of at least 160℉. If your burger patties have a temperature lower than this, bake for a few extra minutes until they reach the required temperature.
